How to Trust God After Pregnancy Loss | Christian Hope

Open journal on a wooden floor with soft natural light, Christian guide to grieving with hope after pregnancy loss

"God, I Don't Understand."

It's one of the hardest prayers to pray.

Not because the words are difficult.

But because they come from a heart carrying questions that seem to have no answers.

Perhaps you've whispered:

"Why did this happen?"

"Why didn't God answer my prayers?"

"Did I do something wrong?"

"Can I ever trust Him again?"

If you've asked questions like these, you're not alone.

Many faithful men and women throughout Scripture wrestled with confusion, disappointment, and unanswered prayers. They didn't stop believing in God, but they struggled to understand what He was doing.

If that's where you are today, I want you to know this:

God isn't frightened by your questions.

He invites you to bring them to Him.

When Faith Feels Shaken

Pregnancy loss has a way of changing more than your plans.

It can change how safe the world feels.

How you view the future.

Even how you relate to God.

You may find yourself feeling:

  • Confused by what happened.
  • Angry that your prayers seemed unanswered.
  • Afraid to trust God with the future.
  • Guilty for questioning Him.
  • Spiritually exhausted.
  • Unsure how faith and grief fit together.

These emotions can be unsettling, especially if you've always believed that trusting God means having unwavering confidence.

But Scripture paints a different picture.

Faith isn't the absence of questions.

Sometimes, faith is choosing to bring those questions to God instead of turning away from Him.

What Research Suggests About Making Sense of Loss

Research into grief suggests that searching for meaning is a common part of bereavement. After a profound loss, many people naturally ask "Why?" or try to understand how life will move forward. While satisfying answers aren't always possible, acknowledging these questions rather than suppressing them can support healthy grieving and help people gradually rebuild a sense of meaning.¹²

For Christians, this doesn't replace faith.

Instead, it reminds us that asking honest questions is part of being human.

Long before psychologists studied grief, the Bible showed people pouring out their confusion before God.

The invitation wasn't to pretend everything made sense.

It was to keep bringing their hearts to the One who never changes.

What Scripture Teaches About Trust

One of my favourite things about Scripture is that it doesn't hide the struggles of faithful people.

Habakkuk questioned God.

"How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?" (Habakkuk 1:2)

Habakkuk wasn't rebuked for asking difficult questions.

He brought them honestly before God.

David questioned God.

In Psalm 13, David cried,

"How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?"

Yet by the end of the psalm, he chose to remember God's faithfulness.

His circumstances hadn't changed.

But his focus had.

Proverbs reminds us where trust begins.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding."

(Proverbs 3:5–6)

Notice what this verse doesn't say.

It doesn't say understanding will always come.

It says that even when it doesn't, God is still worthy of our trust.

Trust isn't having every answer.

Trust is choosing God's character over our limited perspective.

What Trust Looked Like for Me

For a long time, I never imagined that faith and confusion could exist together.

As infertility stretched into years and pregnancy loss became part of my story, I often felt uncertain, confused, and unsure of what God was doing. I still loved Him. I still wanted to trust Him. But I didn't know how to hold my faith and my disappointment together.

I wanted answers.

Instead, God gently reminded me of something deeper.

He wasn't asking me to understand everything.

He was inviting me to keep bringing my heart to Him.

Some days, trust looked as simple as opening my journal, writing one honest prayer, and believing that God was still listening.

Those small moments didn't remove my grief overnight.

But they reminded me that I never had to carry it alone.

Five Gentle Ways to Trust God When You Don't Understand

1. Tell God exactly how you feel.

You don't have to edit your prayers.

God already knows your heart.

2. Hold onto what you know about His character.

When life feels uncertain, God's love, faithfulness, and compassion remain unchanged.

3. Let Scripture speak louder than fear.

Choose one verse to return to throughout the week.

Allow God's truth to gently steady your heart.

4. Give yourself permission not to have all the answers.

Healing doesn't begin when every question is resolved.

Sometimes it begins when we admit we don't know and place those questions into God's hands.

5. Bring your pain to God on paper.

Write the questions you're carrying.

Write the tears you can't explain.

Write the prayers you don't know how to say aloud.

Your journal doesn't need perfect words.

It simply becomes a place where your heart can meet with God.

Trust Doesn't Mean You Understand

Many women quietly believe,

"If I trusted God more, I wouldn't have so many questions."

But trust isn't the absence of doubt.

It's choosing to keep turning toward God, even when life doesn't make sense.

You can grieve deeply.

You can ask honest questions.

And you can still trust the God who walks beside you through every step of your journey.

Those things are not opposites.

Sometimes they exist together.

🤍 Pause and Reflect

Before you leave, spend a few quiet moments with God.

Ask yourself:

  • What question have I been carrying before God?
  • What do I know to be true about His character?
  • What would it look like to trust Him with today, even if tomorrow feels uncertain?
  • Is there one prayer I can write instead of keeping it inside?

Prayer

Father, I don't understand everything that has happened, and some questions still weigh heavily on my heart. Thank You that You are not afraid of my doubts, my tears, or my honest prayers. Help me trust Your character when I cannot understand Your ways. As I bring my pain before You, remind me that I never walk this journey alone. Amen.
